My Training

I have refined my work with groups and individuals over 50 years. During this period, I studied and practiced with many renowned Tibetan masters. My root guru was the famous Lama Thubten Yeshe. Lama Yeshe took me under his guidance in 1984 and ordained me two years later. In his every word and action, he demonstrated boundless awareness in a stunningly dynamic way. Lama Yeshe directed me to “teach dharma” in an academic framework.

After 20 years as a lecturer in Asian philosophy, I moved on as a nondual teacher in Europe, North America and Australia.

In 1998 I teamed up with Dr. Jean-Marc Mantel (President of the Association Internationale de Psychiatrie Spirituelle) to organize the first-ever conference focusing on nondual awareness and psychotherapy at the Mount Madonna Center, California.

This conference was the precursor to a series of annual conferences that were offered in collaboration with graduate schools such as Saybrook Institute, California Institute of Integral Studies, JFK University, the Association of Transpersonal Psychology and the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. It’s during this time that I created the Radiant Mind and Natural Awakening courses.

In recent years I’ve focused my attention on one-on-one supervision. My clients have included Buddhist psychotherapists, psychologists, coaches, counselors, Zen and Sufi masters, Vipassana and mindfulness teachers, yoga teachers, psychiatrists, medical doctors, hospice workers, students of Tibetan Buddhism and Advaita, artists and spiritual seekers generally.

I’ve written a number of books beginning with The Ontology of the Middle Way (Kluwer, 1990), Reasoning into Reality (Wisdom Publications, 1994), The Edge of Certainty: Paradoxes on the Buddhist Path (Nicolas-Hays, 2002), Radiant Mind: Awakening Unconditional Awareness, The Sacred Mirror: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy (co-edited with Prendergast and Krystal), and Natural Awakening: Advanced Guide for Sharing Nondual Awareness. My essays have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Contemplative Psychotherapy, Revision, Journal of the International Association for Spiritual Psychiatry, Psychologia (Tokyo), and 3e millénaire.
